Making Of A Magnet

There are several methods of making magnets from iron pieces with the help of another magnets. The easiest way of making a permanent magnet is by the single touch method. The steps to be followed are:

1. Keep a iron or a steel bar on a table. Now, take a strong permanent bar magnet and keep its one pole for example North pole on the steel or iron bar at end 'N'. Without lifting the bar magnet, move it along the length of the steel or iron bar reach the other end 'S'.

2. Now, lift the magnet and bring the same pole (you started with) to the same point (end N) on the steel or iron bar from which you started. Move the magnet again along the steel or iron bar in the same direction as you did before.

3. Strike the steel or iron bar for about 30-40 times with the same pole and in the same direction Bring some iron filings near the steel or iron bar to check whether it attracts the iron filings. If it does not attract the iron filings, continue to strike the magnet against the steel or iron bar for some more time.

When the iron clips or the iron filings cling to the steel bar, then we can say that the steel bar has been magnetised and it has become a magnet.
